Approximately 1 million acres (400,000 hectares) of land is used for the cultivation of crops. The main rivers used for irrigation are the Amu Darya, Syr Darya and Zerayshan. Additional dams and irrigation projects, especially the Great Gissar Canal helps in providing water for the irrigation of the land.
