The T'ongdosa Temple is one of the oldest temples in Korea. It was built by a priest called Jajang-yulsa in 646 AD. The temple has three relics which belonged to Buddha. These items include a bathrobe, begging bowl and a bone from his skull. The shrine has survived the fall of Silla and the Goreyeo Period. No one knows for sure, but according to the local people, the temple had many buildings which were destroyed when the Japanese invaded Korea. The temple is also known as “The temple without Buddha because there is not a single statue in temple.
