Cebu is one of the most beautiful places in South East Asia, with lots to offer you throughout your stay. Cebu is basically known for its beaches and fun that you can have going to them. There are also many hotels situated near beaches in order to let you have easy access to them while you are here. In addition to the hotels providing you convenience through their location in this regard.
There are others that are placed well enough to also allow you access to business and shopping areas as well. Though there maybe many hotels placed in this way promoting your stay for beach entertainment, there are also other things to see in Cebu. Since Cebu has a rich history attached to it, there are several historical places to see as well. Few of the historic things and places to see while you are in Cebu are briefly described below.
Magellan’s Cross
Located at Magellanes Street and planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The spot where the cross stands today is the place where the first Christian Filipinos (Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana, and several others) were baptized.
Fort San Pedro
Located at the Pier Area in Cebu City, is the smallest tri-bastion fort here. This was the base of the Spanish settlement during their colonial occupation. It covers an area of 2,025 sq. meters, and its walls stand tall at 20 feet and are 8 feet in thickness. Hence, it was difficult for an enemy to penetrate it.
Heritage of Cebu Monument
Located at Colon St. in the Plaza Parain, this monument stands for a great amount of Cebu history. The work on it is the art of Edgardo Castrillo, a national artist.
Colon Street
This is believed to be the oldest street in Cebu. It was constructed by the Spaniards during Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s time. It has been named after Christopher Columbus, and is also believed to be the heart of downtown Cebu. It is an extremely lively place at night with cinemas, restaurants, stores, etc.
Lapulapu Monument
This is situated at Punta Engaño, Lapulapu City, and marks the place where the Mactan Island Chieftain Lapulapu and Ferdinand Magellan took place (27th April, 1521). The monument basically depicts bravery on the part of the Filipinos.
University of San Carlos
This is the oldest school located at P. del Rosario St. It was set up by the Jesuits in 1865 and was previously known as Colegio de San lldefonso.
Capitol Building
The Capitol Building is located at Osmeña Blvd. It is a copy of the American White House, and was built in 1937 at the time when Sotero Cabahug was Governor.
Casa Gorordo Museum
This museum depicting culture in Cebu is located at 35 Lopez Jaena St. It was the home of the 1st Filipino Bishop of Cebu, and a tour inside would reveal history of the area between the period 1860 & 1920 with its relics, paintings, antique items and furniture.
