History of Java

Early settlers came to Java some 3,000 years ago from Vietnam and Southern China, bringing with them their culture, language and technology. These early settlers were talented in the art of irrigation so they started growing rice, which is still the major agricultural crop of Java.

After being ruled by the Indians, Sudanese, Arabs, Europeans and Japanese, Java’s independence came after World War II. The Arabs taught them Islam, which is why the majority of the population of Java is Muslim (approximately 92% of the total population). Besides its historically rich background that has gifted it with many temples and palaces, Java is the center of all the political and economic activities of Indonesia. Jakarta, the capitol of Indonesia located in West Java.
