With its palaces, havelis and heritage houses, Rajasthan is the ideal place for a tourist to explore. It offers a variety of beautiful and exotic places to visit. All the cities of Rajasthan such as Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur offer something fascinating for the eyes to see and admire. The region is home to many cultural festivals, craft fairs and religious gatherings throughout the year.
The City Palace
The City Palace is the citadel of the past ruler of Jaipur, Kachchawah Rajput. It houses a museum with a superb collection of costumes and armory of the past rulers. It exhibits the wonderful blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture.
Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal is a part of the city palace situated in Jaipur. It is the most famous building in the city, built by Sawai Pratab Singh for the ladies of the harem. The monument was actually constructed with the aim of enabling noble ladies to watch the proceedings of the daily life of the city.
Ram Niwas Garden
Ram Niwas Garden was constructed in 1868 by Swai Ram Singh. It is located near the center of modern Jaipur. It is spread over an area of 33 acres and houses Albert Hall Museum, the state zoo, Ravindra Manch theatre as well as cafes and picnic spots.
Albert Hall Museum
Albert Hall Museum is in the middle of Ram Niwas Garden built in 1876 to mark the visit of the Prince of Wales in the city. Made of sandstone and marble, it contains a fine collection of sculptures, paintings and art objects.
Jal Mahal
Built in 1799 for royal duck shooting, Jal Mahal is a picturesque palace amidst the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. It was build by Sawai Pratab Singh located 6.5 km from Jaipur.
Ramgharh
Ramgharh is an ancient site, now famous for its huge artificial lake created by constructing a high reservoir among the hills where people come for picnic during the rainy season.
Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort meaning the majestic fort is one of the largest forts in India situated in Jodhpur. It is located in the center of the city over a 125m high hill. The fort museum has a collection of royal cradles, miniatures, musical instruments and furniture. The canons also well preserved are placed on the ramparts.
Umaid Bhavan Palace & Museum
Umaid Bhavan Palace & Museum of Jodhpur was build by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1929, a fine example of Indo-colonial art. It has now been converted into a royal residence. The museum displays weapons, antique clocks, and crockery and hunting trophies belonging to the maharaja.
The Government Museum
The Government Museum is located in the Umaid public gardens and has a collection of weapons, textiles, miniature portraits and local crafts. It also contains a library and a zoo.
The Garden of Maidens
The Garden of Maidens in Udaipur is at Saheli Marg. It has colorful mountains with monolithic marble elephants. There is also a children’s museum near the garden.
Bharatya Lok Kala Mandal
Bharatya Lok Kala Mandal is near to Chetak circle and has a collection of dolls, masks, folk dresses, puppets, ornaments and paintings.
The City Palace Museum
The City Palace Museum is a sprawling structure preserved in its harmonious design. The octagonal towers are surmounted by cupolas. All the rooms contain beautiful paintings, inlay glass work, antique furniture and colorful enamel.
The Fort of Jaisalmer
The Fort of Jaisalmer is surrounded by a 30 feet high wall. There are gates to the east and west. The Step of the Sati is situated at the entrance of the fort. There are 8 Jain temples in the fort. There are thousands of carved deities and dancing figures erected here. It contains more than 1000 paintings. It also has a collection of Jain, pre Mughal and Rajput paintings. There are five havelis outside the fortress, built by Patva brothers in 1800 with elaborate carvings and balconies. Two of them are now owned by the government.
Folklore Museum
Folklore Museum of Jaisalmer is a place to see. It offers a background of the local history and the culture of Rajasthan.
