There are many places that one can visit when they are in Chennai. You have to remember that Chennai was a fishing village and is known as the gateway to the south. If you have been to some of the Northern cities of India, you will notice that the Cultures here differ. Chennai is a city that has numerous landmarks and beaches and facilities for tourists. In this article, we will be describing some of the well known places to visit in Chennai.
Fort of St. George
The fort was built in the year 1640 by the British East India Company. The supervision of this fort was done by Francis Day and Andrew Cogon. The fortress received its name from the patron saint of England. Inside the fortress is St. Mary’s Church and the fort museum. The church is a historical point in itself in India, as it is one of the oldest churches in India that was built in the 1680’s.
The High Court
Acclaimed as one of the most complex judicial multifaceted in the world, this building is decorated with beautiful domes and corridors. The architecture of the whole place follows the Indo Saracenic way.
Beware though because this place is 99% of the time very busy, and is termed as a significant landmark in Chennai.
The Marina Beach
Marina Beach is known for having the second largest coastline in the world. The beach has a foreshore that is sandy and clean. Also located on the beach are the two tributes to local chief ministers. These are known as Anna and MGR Samadhis. The beach houses other places of interest adjacent to the beach. These are places such as the Senate House, Chepauk Palace, Presidency College, Ice House and the University of Chennai.
Guindy National Park
The Deer Park is situated in an area of five hundred and ninety five acres of land. The area was first part of the Governor estate. The area was converted into a thick forest where you can hunt for spotted deer and the black buck. Also, in this sanctuary, you will find that a small but impressive fauna thrives. At one end of the park there is space reserved for the Governor’s mansion, and at the other end lies the Indian Institute of Technology. This university is one of the leading institutes in Asia. Also, near this park are other famous sites such as the Cancer Institute and a children’s park, which also houses a zoo and a small railway. A little further ahead of this sanctuary lie one of the finest racecourses that India has to offer.
