Villages
Outside Bandar Seri Begawan, you may take a trip up the river and check out the village settlements. This is an interesting experience where you can learn about the way people live which evolved out of learning to survive in the region.
One settlement that is commonly visited is Kampong Parit Resort. Another place is Kampong Ayer, a water village. It is said that this village contains the greatest number of habitats in the world. You may explore the area in detail to find out about the different types of creatures that live there. This is best undertaken with a local who can show you around. Venturing out on your own is not recommended.
Activities
Water sports are common and there is a wide variety of them in Brunei. Some water activities include: swimming, sailing, jet skiing, skin-diving and fishing.
These activities are commonly done around the Brunei Bay and on nearby islands. One favorite water-based activity is SCUBA diving. There is even a SCUBA school named ‘Encounter Borneo’ which trains and certifies people as SCUBA divers. It is affiliated with a sailing school and offers courses in water-skiing and wake-boarding.
If you are in Brunei long enough you may decide to take the courses. You can learn more about the courses from your hotel as most of them have information about the various courses offered in the area. There are other activities available also. Golf is a popular activity and the Mentiri Golf Club has a good course to play on. It is of international standard with 18-holes and par 72. Other sporting activities in Brunei include tennis, polo, football (soccer) and field hockey.
